What is a negative sentence?

A negative sentence tells us that an action does not happen.

Заперечне речення — це речення, у якому ми говоримо, що людина, тварина або предмет не виконує певну дію.

Наприклад:

I play soccer. — Я граю у футбол.

Але якщо ми хочемо сказати: «Я не граю у футбол», нам потрібне слово don't.

✅ AFFIRMATIVE I play soccer.

Я граю у футбол.

🚫 NEGATIVE I don't play soccer.

Я не граю у футбол.

Слово don't означає do not.

don't = do not

У звичайній розмовній англійській частіше використовується коротка форма don't.

Don't or Doesn't?

Use DON'T with I, you, we and they.

Після I, you, we та they для заперечення використовуємо don't.

Формула дуже проста:

I / You / We / They + don't + verb
I I don't play. Я не граю.
YOU You don't read. Ти не читаєш.
WE We don't study. Ми не навчаємося.
THEY They don't sing. Вони не співають.

Use DOESN'T with he, she and it.

А після he, she та it використовуємо інше слово: doesn't.

doesn't = does not

Формула:

He / She / It + doesn't + verb
HE He doesn't play. Він не грає.
SHE She doesn't read. Вона не читає.
IT It doesn't work. Воно не працює.
I / YOU / WE / THEY DON'T I don't play.
HE / SHE / IT DOESN'T He doesn't play.

What happens to the verb after doesn't?

Це найважливіше правило цього уроку.

У стверджувальному реченні ми говоримо:

He plays.

Тут після he до дієслова play додається -s.

Але коли з'являється doesn't, дієслово повертається у свою звичайну початкову форму.

Тому ми говоримо:

He doesn't play.

а НЕ:
He doesn't plays. ❌

AFFIRMATIVE He plays.
↓
NEGATIVE He doesn't play.

Why does the -s disappear?

Можна уявити це так:

У стверджувальному реченні саме дієслово показує, що перед ним стоїть he / she / it.

He plays.

Але в запереченні це граматичне завдання вже виконує слово does усередині doesn't.

Тому основне дієслово більше НЕ отримує -s.

doesn't + play
а не doesn't + plays.
